Well this woulda sucked!
The casting of the Vampire Diaries is absolutely perfect, with smoldering Ian Somerhalder, sexy Paul Wesley and tantalizing Nina Dobrev leading a top notch crew of vampires and humans. But did you know it almost didn't work out that way — there was nearly a lip syncing lead?
According to co-exec producer Marcos Siega, they had to look twice before casting Nina, and Mrs. Pete Wentz was at one point the leading candidate:
"We all independently looked at a bunch of [audition] DVDs," he dished. "We couldn't find the girl we wanted. The network wanted us to hire Ashlee Simpson... But Nina sent this DVD back and we all were home looking, searching, and we came in the next day saying, 'We should look at Nina again.'"
Well, they did, and the rest is history! But they dodged yet another bullet — Paul Wesley auditioned for Damon, before Ian got the role. So why did Ian get it, and not Paul?
According to Ian, it was because Paul was, "just too sweet!"
That's okay — Paul says Ian was, "just too evil!"
And he didn't disagree! Neither do we... and it's why the show is so awesome!
