Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which opens this weekend, takes us back to the dawn of a saga that first enthralled audiences with 1968's Planet of the Apes.
Five more films were made through 1973, and another in 2001. Now, director Rupert Wyatt is rebooting the franchise at the beginning of the apes' takeover.
Gone are actors in ape suits, replaced by special effects and a riveting performance by Andy Serkis, who portrayed Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films.
Stars James Franco, Freida Pinto and Tom Felton agreed that without Serkis’ turn as Caesar the chimpanzee, the film would feel empty. Here's the trailer:
